2025

  • Lab PI Dr. Jennifer MacCormack will be presenting an invited talk on “Bodily contributions to emotion: A constructionist roadmap” at the Association for Psychological Science’s 2025 annual meeting in Washington, DC this May!

Doctoral student Tehya LePage Drummond presents cool findings on interoception’s role in dissociative states during stressful emergencies at SAS 2025 in Portland, OR.

Doctoral student Emma Stephenson presents valuable findings on the nature of interoceptive self-report measures at SAS 2025 in Portland, OR.

  • The VAIL is excited to attend the Society for Affective Science’s 2025 annual meeting in Portland, OR! VAIL grad students Tehya LePage Drummond and Emma Stephenson are presenting posters. Tehya’s poster evaluates “Interoceptive beliefs, trait dissociation, and state emotional arousal shape state dissociation during a mock emergency” and Emma’s poster examines “Interoceptive beliefs moderate the link between interoceptive attention and health anxiety.”

Doctoral student Lauren Beliveau presents exciting findings from the lab’s NSF-funded study on stress contagion at SPSP 2025 in Denver, CO. Lauren did an incredible job leading data collection and wrangling data processing!

  • Hello, SPSPers! VAIL grad student Lauren Beliveau presented a poster on “Interoception and synchrony during acute stress in dyads” at the Society for Personality and Social Psychology’s 2025 annual meeting in Denver, CO. Lab PI Dr. Jennifer MacCormack also gave a symposium talk at the main conference on “Cardiac physiological synchrony and relationship closeness in emotional contagion.”

  • Congratulations to DMP student Gianna Latorre on being selected to represent UVA at the state of Virginia’s Undergraduate Research Showcase at the Capitol, hosted by the Network for Undergraduate Research in Virginia (NURVa). Gianna will present a poster with her DMP results to Virginia legislators in February 2025.

2024

December 2024: Gianna Latorre presents a poster with preliminary results from her Distinguished Major Project in the VAIL.

February 2025: Gianna Laporte presents some preliminary results to Virginia state legislatures at the state capitol.

  • Distinguished Major Project (DMP) student Gianna Latorre presented a poster as part of UVA’s Fozdar Neuroscience Poster session with some preliminary data from her DMP project looking at the role of hunger in physiological and emotional responses to an acute stressor. Congratulations to Gianna on being selected to give a talk with her final data in April 2025 in UVA’s Fozdar Neuroscience Symposium!

August 2024: Dr. MacCormack and VAIL doctoral students Tehya Drummond (left), Lauren Beliveau (center), and Emma Stephenson (right) enjoy a lab outing!

  • Congratulations to incoming VAIL PhD student Tehya Drummond on receiving an NSF GRFP Honorable Mention for her work on “A Network Neuroscience Approach to the Role of Interoception in Risky Decisions”!

  • The VAIL welcomes new PhD students Emma Stephenson and Tehya Drummond who will join us in August 2024! Emma plans to study the role of interoception in social affective processes and wellbeing, including across the lifespan and diverse populations. Tehya plans to study interoception and its relation to risk-taking and decision-making, including as related to brain-body pathways and health disparities.

  • Dr. MacCormack enjoyed a wonderful visit with the Department of Psychology at Georgetown University, where she gave a Departmental Colloquium talk on “The Visceral Mind: The Role of the Body and Interoception in Affect.”

  • Congratulations to PhD student Jingrun Lin and undergraduate research assistant Grace Allen on receiving a Double Hoo Award together from UVA which will support the development of a novel social exploration and risk-taking task. Awesome work!

  • Congratulations to Gianna Latorre on receiving a Harrison Undergraduate Research Award from UVA which will support her Neuroscience Distinguished Majors Project in the VAIL looking at hunger’s impact on acute stress!

  • Dr. MacCormack presented a keynote talk on some new work in the VAIL on “Stressing Me Out! Does Hunger Exacerbate Physiological and Psychological Stress?” at the 2024 UVA Behavioral Science Across Grounds Conference.

2023

  • Dr. MacCormack received a collaborative research grant from the NSF to study “The Role of Stress in Human Crowd Dynamics during Emergency Situations” alongside collaborators Dr. Nicole Abaid in Mathematics at Virginia Tech, Dr. Sachit Butail in Mechanical Engineering at University of Illinois, and Dr. Alethea Barbaro in Mathematical Physics at TU Delft. With these data, the VAIL will be able to address questions about the roles of interoceptive and social sensitivity in group stress contagion and physiological synchrony.

  • The VAIL welcomes new PhD student Lauren Beliveau who joined us in August 2023! Lauren plans to study the role of interoception in self-regulation and wellbeing across the lifespan.

  • Dr. MacCormack was interviewed in a recent Scientific American article on how “Art May Be in the Body of the Beholder.”

  • Dr. MacCormack is giving the keynote address at Shepherd University’s 14th annual Aging Well Workshop, this year focused on interoception. Her talk will discuss “Interoception for Emotional Health and Well-Being Across the Lifespan.” Come join on May 9th 2023 either in-person or virtually! https://agingwellworkshop.totalcamps.com/
